Engagement grants (draft)
The Society offers engagement grant funding for initiatives that increase the scientific understanding of addiction and its treatment.
We encourage applicants to be creative when applying for engagement grants. Past successful projects have included Delphi processes, citizen’s juries, multimedia projects producing healthcare materials, conferences, convening groups to review an area of work and local initiative pilot prevention schemes.
To receive funding, applications must come from settings that have appropriate governance structures in place (e.g., projects will usually need to be set within a university or clinical setting). We do not support primary research projects, projects where the funding would effectively constitute a researcher’s salary or projects that also receive support from, or associated with, the alcohol, tobacco, gambling or cannabis industries.

If your application is successful, we will work with you to produce output for publication on our website . Each project will be supported to produce several pieces according to the needs and size of the project. This might include an article introducing the project, one about the subject area and one outlining findings and/or achievements. They can be written or might be in the form of a podcast or video. All publications arising from the project must acknowledge the SSA as the source of the funding.
The SSA will put out an annual call for projects that will include a number of themes. Applications for engagement grants must demonstrate how they will align with one or more of those themes and with the SSA’s overall aims and objectives.
We award engagement grant funding twice every year. There is a maximum allocation of £30,000 per project. In most cases, maximum conference funding will be £5,000; however, if there is a good reason for your conference proposal to exceed this figure, please get in touch.
Deadlines are as follows:

Applications must be via the online form and no project-related events should be scheduled within 2 months of the submission deadline. You will receive e-mail confirmation that you have successfully submitted the form.
Applicants will be informed of decisions within 1 month of the submission deadline.

Financial support under the SSA Project funding scheme is provided subject to a contract between the SSA and the Member / Associate or an institution they represent. Therefore, any offer or agreement by the SSA to provide funding is subject to contract. Once funding for a Project has been discussed and agreed, the SSA will provide the Project applicant with a contract for the funding in the SSA’s standard form. The terms of this contract will only be amended under exceptional circumstances and the SSA may withdraw any offer or agreement of funding if the contract terms are not agreed by all parties within a reasonable period.
Policy for supporting projects
The Society aims to support projects in the following areas:
- The dissemination of existing research findings
- Bringing together groups of experts or papers, or collating existing material for the purpose of disseminating. (Not in the case of a single subject systematic review, though possibly one based on a number of systematic reviews)
- Convening a group to review work in a particular area, or on a particular drug/phenomenon in a geographic location, in order to produce material for dissemination
The Society cannot fund primary research projects, whether qualitative or quantitative. All projects must have appropriate governance structures in place.
Policy projects will be judged on a case-by-case basis, but specifically excluded are: systematic reviews, research, audit and service evaluation. Funding will not be provided where it would effectively solely serve as a researcher’s salary.
Support will only be given to projects and initiatives from members or student associates of the Society, including the Board of Trustees.
Co-sponsors are welcomed, and the Society will continue to support some joint initiatives with other international bodies or groups of international researchers.
The Society will not support initiatives that also receive support linked to the alcohol, tobacco or gambling industries.
All projects should produce written output suitable for publication on the Society’s website.
A budget of £90,000 has been set aside to support projects. This is awarded at three points each year linked to Trustees’ meetings, with a maximum of £30,000 available for an individual project and in total, on each occasion. Applications must be received prior to the regular Trustees’ meetings in March, July and November, by the following dates each year:
- 14 February
- 13 June
- 10 October
Applications are not considered retrospectively and to allow the Trustees sufficient time to review a proposal, query, clarify and where necessary agree modifications before final agreement, please submit your application allowing two months between the deadline and the event itself.
The Board reserve the right to increase or decrease project and conference funding levels in future years based on the Society’s financial performance and reserves available. Members of the Society should submit a proposal using the form provided. The proposal must contain:
- a) CV of project proposer no more than two sides of A4. The proposer must be a single individual who will liaise with the Society on behalf of the project team
- b) The aims of the project
- c) Relationship of the project to the aims and objectives of the Society
- d) The potential involvement practical and/or financial – of SSA Trustees and other members
- e) Timetable of the project
- f) Full budget details:
- i) A complete, itemised, detailed breakdown must be provided. If the project output includes publication, full allocation of editing, proof-reading, proceeds, royalties, projected print-runs, distribution and any other costs must be obtained eg, from the proposed publisher and detailed
- ii) Proposals must state: This is the full and entire budget requested for this project. I, on behalf of the project-organisers, understand and accept that the SSA will not fund un-budgeted overspends. In the event that the proposed budget is likely to be exceeded, the Society will be consulted in advance, and its consent requested
- iii) Project proposers must specify contingency plans in case of budget over-runs, and specify which area(s) of the project has the potential to exceed the budget
- iv) Preferred funding schedule (for negotiation with the Board of Trustees)
- g) Project outputs, including key objectives essential for the success of the project
- h) Dissemination plan for outputs
Proposals should be submitted with all supporting documents attached or emailed with a covering note, using the online form provided.
The Executive Office will assess applications to ensure the applicant has supplied sufficient detail, and the application meets the stipulations set out in the Policy, Criteria and Procedures (above). Suitable proposals will be considered by the Finance and Strategy Committee and forwarded with a recommendation for acceptance/rejection to the following Trustees’ meeting.
Applicants should be informed of decisions within one week of the Trustees’ meeting and if not already decided, nominate a Trustee to liaise with the project team. For larger projects a steering group would be appointed containing a number of Trustees.
Requests for additional funding can normally only be approved at a Trustees’ meeting. Prior to the meeting a full budget and plan justifying the additional support should be circulated to the Trustees.
The nominated Trustee should provide short written reports of the progress of the project for Trustees’ meetings.
Any publication arising from the project should acknowledge the source of the funding.
